This is a short clip of one the regular meetings Moqtada Sadr has with his aides, I have never seen anything like this before...The divisions are clear to see and the petty arguments they have between themselves is a joy to watch. I will try my best to translate what is being said. I cant translate 100% word for word but you will know whats going on.
It starts off with one of his aides explaining a project to Sadr.
Aide: "In regards to the student orginazation, we have reached our limit now, if you want to expand the project we need support from you, its very important, and you know more than I do how important it is, 90% of the students who attend the Friday prayers are youth, the Sadr Movement is a youth Movement…As for organizing a massive event, whats the point if we spend 1 million or 2 million…what the point of it? We can use these funds to help the youth…the youth are easy to attract…there are strong intellectual secular movements who are able to attract the Iraqi youth like a magnet attracts metal…As you know, in the time of Sayyid Mohammed Baqer Al Sadr, the Marxist movement attracted youth from all over Iraq, some where the sons of religious scholars…this can happen again within two years or three…now the secular movement is very strong in Iraq"
Moqtada Al Sadr interrupts:
"There is nothing here…we can organize many movements, institutions and bodies, but they don’t do anything…For the past year all you have been doing is making committees, bodies e.t.c You are basically telling me 'give me money'…this is your intention (money)…not just you…all of you"
Aide interrupts: "But they spent 2 million just to organise a one off event…
Sadr interrupts: "Am I the one who spent 2 million for the event?"
Aide: "Some of your offices did?"
Sadr: "Then why are you saying this to me? What has it got to do with me? Go ask the offices why they spent 2 million…I havnt given anyone 2 million…I don’t even have 2 million…you are saying this infront of a camera…its not right…if I gave you 2 million you would do the same thing…spend the money…don’t just criticize criticize and criticize…fear Allah…Who spent the 2 million? Come on, Tell me who spent that money…From one side people are begging for money and from the other your telling me they spent 2 million…Ive been wanting to build a general office for 6 months and you have done nothing, we need to help the women, children, disabled, elderly…You are killing yourselves for money and yet you do nothing..."
Sadr now speaking to the sheikh sitting next to him: "With all due respect to you, I have seen nothing from you so far…We as a movement used to insult all other political groups 24/7 and now we want to work with them? Its not right…we shouldnt insult them and we shouldn’t praise them, let there be a balance..I respect you a lot, but for you to sit on the pulpit and praise Abdul Aziz Hakim is wrong.."
Sheikh: "Who praised him?"
Sadr: "You did, I heard you on TV"
Sheikh: "No, all I said was I thank Abdul Aziz Hakim"
Sadr: "You praised him as a politician"
Sheikh: "No, all I said was ‘thank you’, and I think that is a lot less than what you did telling him 'May god bless you' "
Sadr: "But I heard it…I heard it"
Sheikh: "I am ready to challenge anyone who says that I praised Abdul Aziz Al Hakim as a politician…I am ready for anything..."
Sadr insists: "I heard it on TV"
Sheikh: Is this the Friday prayer?
Sadr: "Yes the Friday prayer in Kadhimiya"
Sheikh: "Adel can bring you the CD of my speech…all I said in Kadhimiya was “thank you”… regarding Jordan I didn’t say a single word..."
Sadr: "Jordan? What Jordan? What has Jordan got anything to do with this?
Sheikh: "In Jordan, I said no one condemned the acts of the Banna Tribe (mourning Zarqawi) except our office and Abdul Aziz Al Hakim and I thanked him for that..."
Sadr: "Thanked or not thanked...its not important…just don’t lower yourself"
Sheikh: "I did not lower myself, we both took the same stance on the (Jordan) issue…"
Sadr: "All im saying is that all your efforts are going down the drain"
Sheikh: "We are working hard and are doing what all other political parties are doing"
Sadr: "All im saying is that I don’t agree with what your doing…Its not to my taste"
Sheikh: "How are we supposed to know what is to your taste?"
Sadr: "By calling me and asking me…I don’t like it when you write a letter and send it to all the ministers…I don’t like it when you visit a political party office 10 times, I don’t like it when you praise another party publicly…don’t insult them, but don’t praise them. You are the head of public relations of the Sadr Movement which I lead, you don’t have the right to not take my advice…"
Sheikh: "Its not a matter of praising political bodies, infact I would insult them if they do wrong…"
Sadr: "I don’t want you to criticize them, nor praise them, ignore them and pretend they don’t exist"
Sheikh: "The Iraqi street is politically minded.."
Sadr: "Speak about religious issues, not political"
Sheikh: "The first speech is religious and it caters for a specific amount of people, but the ‘street’ is political and who is to cater for their needs if not me (the Imam)…The media is playing a big role here, they are turning the right into wrong and the wrong into right…If I don’t give a political speech who will? Should we turn a blind eye to the street? Your father said in 1993 that I came to take the Shia out of darkness…Since then we have been trying to do that…So you want me to keep them in darkness?"
Moqtada Sadr simply got owned by the Sheikh.
